The rapid rate of new technologies was a major factor in the significant increase in agricultural outputs. The agricultural industry has implemented the use of pesticides, antibiotics and hormone treatments, in efforts to improve yields and prevent disease in food resources, such as crops, livestock and poultry. The ever-growing trend in factory farming presented issues with soil fertility, inhospitable conditions for animals, environmental pollution by improper handling of pesticides and farm waste, and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes. Consequently, there is now an increasing awareness of the importance of sustainable agricultural practices. Globalized food distribution systems have the potential to disseminate pathogens that cause foodborne illness, pests and other hazards on a large scale, whether intentional or accidental. Current demands lean towards more stringent safety practices, less pesticide use, humane treatment of animals, and limiting environmental impact, while continuing the production of high quality foods to feed the world’s growing population. In Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is the federal department primarily responsible for development of agriculture, policies, research and technology to maintain the security of Canada’s food supply and environmental health, while promoting sector growth.
